Note: Due to ongoing updates, some display forms may appear different in the documentation than in your
Control Panel. Document updates will also occur on an ongoing basis but typically lag functional updates.
Accessing the NRS-Online service from within the Control Panel will result in the
following form being displayed. This is the NRS-Online Main Menu.
Depending on a user's permissions, some of the buttons may not be visible. To access any of these
NRS-Online sections, just click the button. If you need to work in more than one window, use the
New Panel option.
NRS-Online : Settings
The Settings section is very important as it contains the form for adding new Categories. Categories
provide the means for organizing registered items. Each registered item must be within a single
Category. The same Categories are also used for organizing Marks. The In addtion to Category management,
the Settings section also provides the means for managing NRS-Online permissions and setting the status
of your NRS-Online account. The Settings section provides a form that looks like:
Status:
Categories:
Category Name:
Level:
Permission Settings:
NRS Function
NRS Permission
Level
Access Settings:
Access Items:
Access Marks:
Access Daily Reg. URLs:
Access Lists:
Access Logs:
eRegister an Item:
Add a Mark:
Add a Daily Reg. URL:
Add a New Category:
Update Status:
Update Permissions:
The following are the key points of this section:
Status: Normally there are two options: Active
and Inactive.
Edit Category: If you need to change the name or permissions of a Category then use
the Edit Category button. Also, if you wish to delete a Category, you must first go to
the Edit Category form.
Add New Category: An account must have at least one Category for Items to be registered.
There is no pre-set limit on the number of Categories that an Account may have. To add a new category,
simply enter a name of at least two characters, and optionally set the minimum level for access,
and click the Add New Categorybutton. The category list will be immediately updated.
Permissions: This form allows the administrator to enter a minimum NRS Permission (not
the Account Permission) and the minimum level for accessing and using NRS-Online features. A User's
NRS permission value (and account level) is listed in the Users module.
Be careful editing permissions if more than one user has access to the Account. Only allow users to
edit items and categories, or change the account status, if they are trusted individuals.
The Account Log will contain actions of users in the NRS-Online module.
So, for security purposes periodically check the Account Log to ensure that all users are behaving properly.
NRS-Online : Items
The Items section contains information on the items that have been registered. The information will be for
all registered items, regardless of how they were registered (whether online or via postal mail, fax, e-mail or
drop-off). The items are organized by Category.
When accessing the Items Module, you will need to select a Category to see the items within the Category.
Once you have selected a Category, you can then select an Item to edit. The edit screen will look similar to
the following form (items in green would be replaced with the particulars
of the registration:

Item Description:
Item Description shown on Validation Page:
The details above the Update Item Details button cannot be changed. This information is the
data established by NRS-Online when a registration takes place. The remainder of the data can be
edited at any time.
If you wish to have a validation link to demonstrate to third parties, then check the Allow Validation Link
checkbox. Then you will have to add the proper HTML code to your website to provide the link. Alternatively,
you can also give out the Validation Code and third parties can enter the code on the home page to
retrieve information on the item. In both cases, the Allow Validation Link needs to be checked in order
to display the link and code.
If you would like to display a seal with a validation link to demonstrate to third parties that an item is registered,
following these instructions:
Check the Allow Validation Link.
Copy the appropriate HTML onto your website:
Two elements are needed: 1) the Seal Graphic and 2) the Validation link displayed in the Item's details.
You may host the seal graphic at your site, or you may link to the seal graphic at NRS. Below is
example HTML when using an image hosted at NRS-Online:
<a
href="https://sevik.net/service/validate-item?x=7932&y=764543&z=21578&k=817199432"
target="_valwin"><img
src="http://sevik.net/nrsregistered.gif" style="border:none"
alt="REGISTERED BY NRS-ONLINE" /></a>
The portion in green will be provided in your
Registry for your Item when External Validation is allowed.
If you host the graphic on your
own site then the src tag in the <img> element will need to be changed
to point to the new location of
the graphic. If you are using the NRS-Online hosted image and your page is accessed via SSL then change the
src tag in the <img> to start with https:// rather than http:// -
the difference is
the addition of the letter s.
If you need technical assistance with the HTML, please
submit a Support message.
Final Note on Items
The information in the Control Panel is information about the registered item. The actual item is located
on other servers and offline. So, even in the worse case scenario of a server crash, only the
data since the last backup would be lost. Registered items and associated records are backed up daily, and stored
on other servers and offline.
NRS-Online : eRegister
The eRegister section allows Users to upload files, and enter text, for registration. Unlike the Quick eRegister
feature in the Items section, the eRegister section allows the User to select in which Category
to list the registered item.
Below is the eRegistration form:
eRegister an Item

registration. Entered Text means that you will enter the Text to be registered in the text box located on the eRegistration
form.
If you select Upload, any Entered Text will be ignored. Likewise, if you select Entered Text any uploaded file will
be ignored. Computer Files may be up twenty-four (24) megabytes in size. If you require more capacity, please
contact NRS. Entered text should be kept below 32000 characters. For larger text,
consider uploading it as a text file.
Category:
All registered items (and marks) must be associated with a Category. Select the Category from the
list. When the item is registered, it will be included with other registered items in the selected list.
Note: If a Category is deleted the reference to the item will also be deleted,
and thus not accessible from within the Control Panel.
Reference Name:
This is the name that will be displayed in the Item's list. It can be changed later. It may be any name that you
want.
If Uploading, If Entered Text:
Depending on which method you choose, these options are the points of entry for the registered item. If you
selected Entered Text then enter the text in the box that you wish registered. Otherwise, click the
button to browse your computer system for the file to register.
Description:
Enter any description that you want of the item. This may be changed later.
Click the eRegister button to initiate the registration. When an item is registered, the details will appear
in the Control Panel Items Module under the Category selected, and the registration event will have been
logged in the NRS-Online Logs module.
Note: NRS-Online no longer sends a confirmation e-mail for each registration. Please
maintain copies of the eRegistration Log for ongoing registration tracking.
After the registration form is submitted the system will return the results - either successful or not.
If there was an error then it will be displayed at the top of the screen. If the eRegistration was
successful then you will received a message similar to the following:
Item (Entered Text) Registered on Mon Jan 11 14:35:47 2010

MD5 Signature: 0b46fbb9909abd73120973d1906f7c9e Category: CATEGORY NAME.
After an eRegistration,
you may continue to eRegister items, or go to the Items section, and verify that the item has been included
in your Registry.
NRS-Online : Marks
The Marks Module is a useful tool for keeping track of the trademarks, servicemarks and
other names that your business uses. It is only a database, and is not meant to offer protection
for marks.
However, if you need to register the date of actual usage of a mark, NRS-Online's standard
registration services can play a role - for example,
mail or upload a copy of the mark in use, such as in an advertisement or catalog,
or daily register the content of
of one or more URLs that contain the mark in usage. Please contact legal
counsel for information on the proper method of demonstrating usage of a mark, and
the difference and value between Federal registration of marks, State registration of marks and
common law marks.
The Marks Module will initially provide the following form which provides a list of
Categories.
Category:
The Marks Module is a mirror of the Items Module, described
earlier. To see the Marks placed in a particular Category, select the Category in the list and
then click View Marks. Once you have a list of the Marks, you may select one to see its
details, and edit them. Additionally, once you have selected a Category, you may also add Marks by
using the Add New Mark button at the top of the section.
If you choose to edit a Mark's details then you will see a form similar to the following
NOTE: Your browser must support IFRAMEs to access
a Mark's details.

Reference Name:
USPTO Wordmark:
USPTO Registration #:
USPTO Serial #:
USPTO FIling Date:

Notes about the Mark:
You can set the fields with any data you wish, there is no checking for validity. The Reference Name
though is what is seen in the Mark's list.
This module is a reference
module only, and NRS-Online takes no particular action other than storage and retrieval with the data. For
particular, USPTO data you can visit the US Patent and Trademark Office website
and search for your mark. The search should return the USPTO information necessary to populate the fields.
If there are any services that you would like in relation to Marks management,
please contact NRS, or submit a Support Message. NRS is regularly reviewing new
functionality to add to the Control Panel.
Note: once a Mark has been deleted, it cannot be undeleted.
It is possible that NRS can re-construct the data though. If you have accidently deleted a Mark, please
submit a Support message immediately.
NRS-Online : Daily URL Registrations
A subscriber may have the content at up to eight (8) URLs registered each day.
(If you need more, request additional URL slots by submitting a support message.)
To have content at a URL registered each day, go to the
Daily URL Reg. Module, and add the URL, or edit a URL already in the system,
and set the URL to Active Status.
Each day, the content will be registered, and the latest registration date and MD5 of the content registered will
be displayed in the module. Additionally, all daily registrations are also listed in the Daily URL Registration Log
accessible via the Logs module.
Note: only the content at the URL is registered, and not content that may be referenced at that URL. So,
if a URL points to a HTML page, only the HTML content is registered, and not the images that may be referenced by
the HTML content. To register all content that may be displayed at a particular webpage, a daily page URL must be
entered for the HTML content as well as any images. It is recommended that only content that would need to be authenticated
be registered.
If you would like to display a seal with a validation link to demonstrate to third parties that a page is being registered
each day, following these instructions:
Enter the URL into an available slot in the Daily URL Registration section.
Set the URL Status to Active.
Check the External Link box.
Copy the appropriate HTML onto your website:
Two elements are needed: 1) the Seal Graphic and 2) the Validation link displayed in the Control Panel
under
the URL in the Daily URL Registration section. Each URL has its own unique validation link.
You may host the seal graphic at your site, or you may link to the seal graphic at NRS. Below is
example HTML when using an image hosted at NRS-Online:
<a href="https://sevik.net/service/nrsonline?act=validate-url&x=7867&y=764540&k=2005986502" target="_valwin"><img
src="http://sevik.net/nrsregistered.gif" style="border:none"
alt="REGISTERED DAILY BY NRS-ONLINE" /></a>
The portion in green will be different for each URL. If you host the graphic on your
own site then the src tag in the <img> element will need to be changed to point to the new location of
the graphic. If you are using the NRS-Online hosted image and your page is accessed via SSL then change the
src tag in the <img> to start with https:// rather than http:// - the difference is
the addition of the letter s.
If you need technical assistance with the HTML, please
submit a Support message.
NRS-Online : Lists
The Control Panel can generate lists of 1) all items that a subscriber has permission to view;
2) all marks that a subscriber has permission to view; and 3) all URLs in the Daily URL Registration system.
To view the list, simply push the button for the appropriate list. Currently, there are no formatting
options for the lists. The display options and what is displayed are currently fixed.
NRS-Online : Logs
The Control Panel can provide logs of 1) all eRegistrations - those registrations made via the Control Panel;
2) all daily URL registrations; 3) all clicks made on validation links associated with daily URL
registrations; and 4) all clicks made on item validation links.
The logs will typically contain a time stamp of the action, as well as related information pertaining to the
action. For example, the validation logs will also contain the
IP of the entity clicking and the item or URL that is referenced by the validation link.
To allow validation links for items, select the Allow Validation Link checkbox in the Item's Details.
For Daily URL Registration links, select the Allow Validation checkbox in the Daily URL Registration
module. Additionally, for a Daily URL Registration link to be valid, the URL must be Active.
To view the log, simply push the button for the appropriate list. Currently, there are no formatting
options for the logs. The display options and what is displayed are currently fixed.
Final Notes
The Control Panel is being updated on a regular basis. If you encounter bugs, or other problems while using
the Panel then please submit a Support message. If you are not able to access your Control Panel, use the
contact page to obtain assistance.
If you do not wish to use the Control Panel, you may register items by facsimile, e-mail, postal mail or
by arranging a drop-off with an NRS Agent (available in the the Los Angeles and Seattle areas).
For facsimile, postal mail and e-mail registration, please review the information on the
registration forms page.
The data at the NRS-Online site is backed up on a regular basis. However, it is possible that data entered
into the system between backups could be lost during a power outage or server crash. NRS-Online will provide
notice of such problems via Twitter and/or e-mail to users.
